Leather Sofa Dyes

Are you tired of inferior leather dye, poor adhesion & wear resistance? Try the best forget the rest

Showing 1–12 of 29 results

People who buy leather furniture know just how luxurious it feels. It's comfortable and opulent and it looks great.

The trouble is, after a while, it can start to look tired as the colours fade. Homes with pets and young kids are more prone to this, but even without these added factors, a leather couch will begin to lose its colour.

If your leather sofa has seen better days, the Leather Colour Doctor has the answer: our superior range of leather care products includes an impressive selection of leather dyes.

We are keen to offer advice alongside our products, so read on to discover more.

The main culprit is sunlight. Just as UV rays are harmful to human skin, they also damage leather, drying out the natural oils and bleaching out the colours.

On top of this, daily use scuffs the surface, removing the pigments from the leather.

Cleaning your leather sofa with harsh chemicals will also cause fading, which is why we recommend that you never use furniture polish or any petroleum-based cleaners.

To truly revitalise your leather couch and seats, we highly recommend our leather dye and repair kit (also suitable for vinyl, leatherette and faux leather).

This three-step kit includes three clearly-labelled 500ml bottles:

Prep Fluid

The first step involves cleaning and degreasing the surface to avoid adhesion problems when applying the leather dye as it is water-based.

Leather Dye

Our dyes are produced using premium quality ingredients and have a high resin content for fast, effective colouring. They are also scuff resistant, protecting your leather against future wear and tear.

Top Coat Sealer

The sealer provides an extra layer of protection and is available in matt, gloss or satin finish. It is tough but flexible, so you know it will look fantastic and guard your cushions against the rigours of daily use.

With well over forty different colours to choose from, there's sure to be a leather dye that matches your sofa. Alternatively, get in touch and we'll advise you on what colour to choose.

If you wish, you can dye leather a different colour completely, in which case you may need extra dye to ensure you get the shade you want.

As a general rule, it is always easier to darken a lighter colour. In order to change a dark sofa to a light colour, you may need to use leather paint rather than dye.

The name Chesterfield has been associated with quality furniture since the mid-1700s and these beautiful items are still available today.

Named for the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, who wanted an elegantly designed leather couch for gentlemen to comfortably sit without crumpling their suits, this charming piece has a low back, rolled, padded arms and is usually in dark leather. The back and arms are also the same height.

Although they're available fabric, the leather variety has a real sense of luxury, often with a distinctive two-tone finish.

Our Chesterfield restoration kit is specifically designed to revitalise this two-tone look, returning your prized leather couch to its former glory. There are five easy steps to follow, each using a clearly labelled bottle.

Here's what's included along with basic instructions for use:

Bottle #1 - Foaming Leather Cleaner

Before you begin, it's a good idea to move the couch to a well-ventilated area and to wear gloves throughout the process.

Apply with a soft scrubbing brush using a gentle circular motion. Leave the foam for about five minutes to break down the grease and grime. Wipe off with a clean cloth and repeat the step if necessary. Once the cloth comes away clean you can move to the next stage.

Bottle #2 - Leather Prep Solvent

This is to remove any older layers of sealant and provide a stable base for the next step. Apply using a clean cloth and focus on body-contact areas, such as head and armrests.

You may notice traces of pigment on your cloth, but this is normal and is an indication that you have broken through the old sealer.

Scratch And Crack Repair Paste

At this stage, you should make any necessary repairs using the filler included in the kit. The filler is applied with a spatula to cover cracks, holes and splits. Leave it to dry and harden, or use a hair dryer.

Finally, sand it with a fine grit sandpaper (between 500 and 1000-grit).

Bottle #3 - Leather Adhesion Promoter

This acts as a primer to help fix the dye in the fibres.

Apply a thin coat with a roller or sponge and dry with a hair dryer. Add a second and third coat, alternating the direction of the strokes as this forms a stronger bond. make sure the final coat is completely dry before moving on to the next phase.

Bottle #4a - Leather Dye Colour Base

Test a small amount of the dye on a hidden section to see how well the colour matches.

Add the first coat using a sponge, wool dauber or bottle spray. If using a sponge or wool dauber, only apply light pressure - it doesn't require much elbow grease. If using a spray diffuser, dilute the leather dye with water and keep the nozzle close to the surface to avoid it drying too quickly and causing rough patches.

Whichever method you use, be sure to evenly coat the entire couch.

Dry the first coat using a hair dryer. This will look patchy for a while, but that's normal.

Add more layers, drying them in between, until you are satisfied with the results.

Bottle #4b - Permanent Top Colour

The second stage of the leather dye adds the two-tone distressed or aged look that gives the leather couch character and appeal.

Apply this as in the previous step, wiping off excess dye to enhance the two-tone effect.

Bottle #5 - Leather Sealer Top Finish

The final stage involves the application of a sealer that locks in the colour and protects the leather surface from scuffs, scratches, stains and harmful UV rays.

Again, you can use a sponge or bottle spray, but it must be applied in light coats.

Three coats are usually needed, and you should change the direction of the strokes by 45º with each coat as this helps to scatter the light reflection easily. You can use a hair dryer to speed up drying time between coats.

Once complete, allow at least 24 hours for the top finish to set before use.

Applying Leather Colour Doctor protection cream once a month will ensure that your couch remains in perfect condition for many years to come. See our website for further details.

Our all-in-one leather dye sealant is ideal for everything from minor scuff and scratch repairs to recolouring sofas.

This amazing water-based cream contains a built-in sealant to protect your leather and provide vibrant colours that will transform your couch.

As always with the Leather Colour Doctor's products, it is easy to use:

Start by lightly scouring the leather with an abrasive pad to remove the original sealant.

Apply a thin layer of dye using a high-density foam sponge and allow it to dry. The thin first layer helps the subsequent coats to adhere better. Test on an inconspicuous area before you begin.

Add further layers until you achieve the desired effect.

Although this cream contains a sealant, you can protect your leather even further by applying our leather protection cream.

This all-in-one leather dye sealant comes in a fantastic selection of colours. If you can't find the one you want or wish to discuss a bespoke colour, please feel free to contact us.

The cream is available in the following sizes:

  • 50ml
  • 250ml
  • 500ml
  • 1 litre
  • 5 litres

As a general guide, we suggest that 50ml is enough to cover small scuffs or to dye a leather wallet.

Between 100 and 200ml would be adequate for handbags, shoes or a leather jacket.

250ml will be plenty for a car seat or large stool, and 500ml would cover two car seats.

One litre would transform a three-piece suite or a full car interior.

As leather care specialists, we are keen to share our knowledge and expertise with our customers, so here are a few tips on looking after your leather couch:

  • Don't use alcohol-based cleaners. Some websites recommend using rubbing alcohol to clean leather, but this eventually dries out the leather and causes it to crack up. Many wet wipes contain alcohol and other chemicals that will have the same effect. For weekly cleaning, a clean damp cloth is better.
  • Don't use furniture polish. No matter which brand, most spray polishes are unsuitable for cleaning leather sofas as they will also cause them to crack.
  • that Avoid home remedies. Never mistake natural for safe! Well-meaning websites suggest home remedies like lemon juice, vinegar, cream of tartar and baking powder, but these can ruin your leather in the long term.
  • Avoid cheap leather dye. When you want to revitalise your sofa, invest in a good-quality dye, such as ours. Cheap dye doesn't have the same appeal and will probably rub off on your clothes.
  • Invest in leather cleaner. Although soapy water will remove superficial dirt and grease, water can leave stains on the surface. Distilled water is better, but it's worth buying a suitable leather cleaner.

Leather is a wonderful material with many benefits. It's tough, durable and long-lasting, but only when looked after properly. You can extend the life of your beautiful leather sofa by following this advice and investing in the Leather Colour Doctor's specialist leather care products.
