As a premium brand in leather care, the specialists at Leather Colour Doctor understand that as wonderful as leather is, it needs our help to stay looking and feeling great.

Our selection of professional leather care products includes a leather sealer that will protect your leather items from stains and general wear and tear for many years. You'll be able to relax and enjoy your leather goods, safe in the knowledge that you've done all you can to stop them from being spoiled. It's the very best way to protect your investment.

If you want to know exactly what a leather sealant is and why you need it, you can find out here:

Leather is a porous, natural, organic material made from animal hide. Without the tanning* process, where the hides are cured, leather would decay just like any other organic matter.

*So called because of the traditional use of tannins in the process

In fact, all leather items do deteriorate with age. They are breaking down but at a greatly reduced rate. Tanning helps to drastically slow this action down, potentially meaning that leather could last for decades or even centuries.

Even so, it needs a helping hand. Leather has to be looked after if it's to last.

The Trials Of Daily Use

Throughout its life, leather faces the challenges of daily use. Children, pets, spills, stains, burns, and general wear each add their own stresses and strains, making leather look worn out over time.

However, leather's greatest enemy is sunlight. UV rays attack the surface, drying the moisture and drawing out the natural oils that keep it flexible and soft. Eventually, the surface will begin to crack. And once this damage gets too bad, there's not much you can do to save the leather.

Long-Lasting Protection

One way of ensuring your leather items last longer is by applying a leather sealant, or top coat sealer finish.

This clear leather sealant forms a tough, flexible and durable coat that will protect the leather surface from becoming worn and faded, thus extending its lifespan.

Enhance That Leather Aroma

When finished, you'll notice the difference in terms of the vibrant colour, feel and even the smell of the leather. And if you ever need to revitalise this, we have the perfect solution in the form of a leather-scented fragrance mist spray. See our website for further details.

Our leather sealant is a clear polyurethane-based liquid that can be sponged or sprayed on to form a tough but flexible top coat.

It is a scuff-resistant sealer that's waterproof and has UV and chemical-resistant qualities to provide exceptional levels of protection against the rigours of daily life. Another bonus of using our leather sealant is that it fixes the colour within the fibres, so there is no risk of the dye transferring to your skin and clothes.

When applied, it enhances the colour with a range of finishes; matt, satin, flat matt, or gloss.

A Choice Of Sizes

This professional-quality leather finish comes in various sizes:

  • 50ml
  • 100ml
  • 250ml
  • 1 litre
  • 5 litres

As a rough guide, a 250ml bottle of top coat sealer finish is adequate for covering a full set of car seats.

Stop Cracks Before They Start

The saying "prevention is better than cure" may be old and overused, but that doesn't make it any less true. Cracked leather not only looks bad, but if it isn't fixed in time it can compromise the whole item as it is beyond repair. In some cases, a panel can be replaced but this isn't always successful as the new area will always look slightly different.

Our crack filler repair paste is the very best option here, covering all those annoying cracks and holes and providing a tough, flexible base that can be dyed to match the original or given a whole new look. And when you apply the sealant over the top of this, you have the perfect means of protecting your treasured objects.

Essentially, it can be used on any leather goods, such as jackets, shoes, and bags, but it is especially suitable for furniture and car seats.

Both use large areas of leather that experience heavy use. Constant rubbing of clothing across the surface causes wearing, and there's a high chance of scratches and tears from jewellery, kid's toys, and pet's claws or paws.

Our leather sealant is safe for aniline/semi-aniline, pigmented, top-coated, bonded, two-tone and antique leather, as well as faux leather and vinyl surfaces.

It's entirely up to you and depends on your personal preference, but we offer a choice of gloss, matt, satin and flat matt to cover all tastes.

A gloss finish gives a high sheen, while satin is somewhere between matt and gloss. As you probably know, matt has little or no sheen at all.

For those not familiar with flat matt, this is specifically formulated to be non-reflective.

To help you decide, satin is probably the most popular as it isn't too reflective and offers a balanced finish.

As with all our products, our leather finish top coat is designed to be easy to use:

Applying The Sealant

Wipe on with a sponge or spray it on, making sure it is spread evenly across the whole surface. Don't overload the sponge or the sealant will start to foam which will spoil the final finish.

If using a spray bottle, make sure you cover the entire surface using sweeping movements that overlap.

Drying The Sealant

Allow each coat to dry before adding the next, or use a hairdryer to speed up the process. Hold the hairdryer about 8 inches away from the surface so it doesn't get too hot.

Sand Between Coats

For best results, you should apply no more than three coats, and it's a good idea to lightly sand the first layer once dry, using fine-grit sandpaper (1200-grit is perfect for the job) to achieve a super-smooth finish.

Your treasured leather items will now be protected against grime, stains, scuffs, scratches and harmful UV rays.

Before adding a top coat gloss, matt, satin or flat matt finish, it might be wise to repair any significant damage and clean off any deeply-ingrained dirt and stains first to ensure that the top coat sealer finish bonds well.

Our fantastic collection of leather care products includes leather repair paste and cleaning solutions that will give your leather items a new lease of life.

And when you apply our exceptional leather finish over the top, you can be confident that it will keep your leather looking amazing for a long time to come.

When you've spent time, money and effort on a vintage, antique or pre-loved leather item, you need to know that your endeavours will be rewarded. You want to enjoy the use of these pieces of furniture or luxurious car interiors without worrying about them being worn or damaged.
