How To Restore Leather Couch Cushions

3 November 2022

A leather sofa is often the focal point of a living room, but when leather furniture loses its good looks, it can make a room look and feel shabby. Leather couch cushions are often the first part of your leather couch to lose its appeal, so knowing how to restore leather cushions is a great comfort for homeowners.

This guide details the steps you need to care for leather couches, or even faux leather furniture, particularly the cushions. You don't need to spend a lot of money to repair leather sofas, and a leather sub patch is often a highly cost effective solution for damaged leather furniture.

Clean The Leather Couch Cushions

The first step in caring for a leather sofa is to clean it properly, and the right equipment makes the process much easier, so make sure you have:

  • A vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment
  • A soft-bristled brush
  • A clean cloth
  • Leather conditioner
  • Warm soapy water

Vacuum your couch. Use the upholstery attachment to remove any dust, dirt, or debris from the surface of the couch. Be sure to vacuum in both directions to ensure that you don't miss anything.

Spot clean any stains. If there are any stains on your couch, use a clean cloth and water to spot clean them. Do not scrub ink stains, as this could damage the leather. If you have stubborn stains, white vinegar or rubbing alcohol will help you clean stubborn stains or tough marks. As always, be cautious when using rubbing alcohol, and wear gloves when doing so.

Keep Leather In Great Condition

Apply leather conditioner as this will help to keep your couch looking its best and prevent it from drying out and cracking over time. Apply the conditioner evenly over the entire surface of the couch using a clean cloth. Buff the couch with a soft-bristled brush. This will help to evenly distribute the conditioner and give your couch a nice shine.

Wipe down the couch with a clean cloth. This will remove any excess leather conditioner that was not absorbed by the couch.

Check The Leather Couch Cushions For Damage

Once your cushions are clean, take the time to inspect them, and the entire couch, for damage before you start to restore your furniture. Pay close attention to the cushions, as they are often the first area to show wear and tear.

Look Out For Scratches And Any Stain Which Makes Your Furniture Look Unsightly

Check for any rips, tears, scratches, pen marks or holes in the fabric. Look for any stains or discoloration that may indicate a spill and feel for any lumps or bumps that could indicate a problem with the filling. As soon as you notice a stain, look to repair it as quickly as possible. You can often rub off liquid substances, making the repair work a simple process.

With scratches, you'll often need more work, but you can often buff or rub these problems away.

Flip the cushions over to check the undersides for any damage, and don't overlook the seams. If you find any damage to the leather couch cushions, you should carry out repairs before any further work.

Invest In A Good Quality Leather Repair Kit

A leather repair kit typically contains a leather cleaner, a leather conditioner, a leather dye, leather glue, and a leather repair compound. The leather cleaner is used to clean the surface of the leather to remove any dirt, dust, or other debris that may be present. The leather conditioner is used to moisturise the leather and help protect it from cracking or drying out.

A Well-Filled Repair Kit Ensures You Are Ready For Anything

As you would expect, the leather dye is used to change the colour of the leather if desired. The leather repair compound is used to fill in any cracks or holes that may be present in the leather.

Leather repair kits may also contain other items such as sandpaper, a sponge, and a brush but please note that the items in a leather repair kit will vary depending on the manufacturer.

How To Repair A Tear In A Leather Sofa Or Cushion

While each couch, sofa or indeed leather cushion is unique, the process of repairing a tear follows a similar pattern, and these steps should help you repair any tear in your leather furniture.

  • Clean the area around the tear with a leather cleaner.
  • Apply leather glue or a thin coat of leather adhesive to the underside of the leather.
  • Place the sub patch over the tear and press it into place.
  • Apply a small amount of pressure to the patch for 30 seconds to allow the adhesive to set.
  • Allow the adhesive to dry, sometimes for as long as 24 hours.
  • Trim any excess leather from the patch with a sharp knife (watch your fingers).
  • Apply a thin layer of conditioner to the repaired area.

Please be patient when repairing tears in leather, and always ensure the glue dries before using the couch or cushion. In emergencies, you can use a small amount of super glue when you repair leather furniture but ideally, you shouldn't use super glue, only leather glue, when repairing leather material.

Tear In A Leather Sofa

You Can Speed Up The Drying Process If Necessary

You can use a heat gun to speed up the drying time for the patched area, but if you aren't in a hurry, you can allow the sub patch to dry naturally on your leather sofa.

If you follow these steps, you can repair and restore tears or holes in a leather sofa in no time at all. Make sure you wipe excess glue from leather sofas, and having a sponge or cloth handy will help with this process.

Refilling A Leather Sofa Cushion

If your leather couch is soft or saggy, you don’t need to replace it to enjoy comfortable leather furniture. Instead, you can usher new life into leather sofas by refilling your cushions.

Foam Filler Is An Affordable To Repair Your Sofa

A great solution to fill a leather sofa cushion is foam wrapped in fibre. This is cost effective, combining the softness of fibre with the support you expect from foam. There are options like feather wrap, but that is more expensive, and isn't any more effective than foam filler.

If your leather sofa cushions have a zip opening, refilling them is a simple process. Simply unzip the couch cover, pull flat or worn filling out and replace it with new material. Once you are satisfied with how the cushion looks, you can close the zip and replace the cushions. Be sure to rub and smooth the new filler out to the corners of each area of the furniture.

Sometimes Refilling Leather Sofas Is A Big Job

Of course, some leather furniture don’t have cushions with zips, instead, they are a single unit. In these cases, refilling cushions is a much larger job. It might be that one side of your furniture is used more than the other, depending on where you sit, and it will be flatter, but you can add material so it feels smooth and as good as new. Check the edges of your couch, as you might need to fix this small area more pressingly.

Don't Move Springs If You Can Avoid It

Get help to turn the couch over, and remove the protective cover at the bottom of the leather furniture. You’ll likely see springs in the furniture, and you don’t want to remove these, if it can be avoided. Instead, you will place fibre around the springs, plumping up the leather furniture.

Once you are happy with how this looks, you can reattach the protective cover at the foot of the couch, and then return the couch back to its position.

How To Restore Colour To Leather Couch Cushions

If the issue with your leather couch cushions is they've lost colour, dyeing them is a sensible, and effective solution. You should have:

  • Leather dye
  • Rubber gloves
  • Cloths and a sponge
  • A brush
  • Material to protect the ground and any surface you don't want covered in dye

Prepare the dye according to the instructions on the package, and then while wearing rubber gloves, dip the sponge, cloth or brush into the dye. Dab the dye onto the leather couch cushion, using care to avoid getting any dye on other surfaces.

It is often a smart idea to test the dye on an innocuous area of the couch, so if any problems arise, you haven't ruined the couch or your cushions. Continue until the entire cushion is covered with dye. Allow the dye to dry completely and determine if you need to apply further coats. If you do, please repeat the dyeing process until you are satisfied. Once you are happy with the colour, you can add a final layer that protects the leather, and then allow this to dry before using the cushion again.

How To Best Protect Leather Furniture And Couch Cushions

The following steps are useful in extending the lifespan of your leather furniture:

Vacuum regularly - at least once a week, if not more. This will help to remove any dirt or dust that has accumulated on the surface of the leather.

Wipe down with a damp cloth - this will help to remove any remaining dirt or dust. Be sure to use a soft, lint-free cloth so as not to damage the leather.

Apply a leather conditioner - this will help to keep the leather from drying out and cracking over time. Be sure to read the instructions on the conditioner before applying, as some conditioners may need to be diluted before use.

Use leather protection cream - as the name suggests, working thin layers of leather protection cream into your leather sofa ensures it remains supple, and adds longevity to leather furniture

Avoid direct sunlight - this can cause the leather to fade or crack over time. If you must place your furniture in direct sunlight, be sure to use blinds or curtains to filter the light.

Avoid extreme heat or cold - this can also cause the leather to dry out and crack over time. If you live in an area with extreme weather conditions, be sure to use a humidifier in the winter and an air conditioner in the summer.

Avoid sharp objects - this includes anything from pets' claws to children's toys. Sharp objects can puncture or tear the leather, causing permanent damage.

Whether something happens or natural wear and tear impacts the quality of your leather furniture, there is a solution. A leather patch can fix worn or torn areas, including edges and covers. Good filler helps you repair your furniture to a high level, and you'll be glad of the fix work carried out on leather or suede furniture. Whether you want to sit and lie in comfort, or you want the centre-piece furniture to look great, you can repair minor or major issues in no time.
